Language Proficiency Tests
VS. Real Life Communications
At McGill English is the instructional language. The University requires that every ESL applicants should prove their English proficiency to make sure their opportunity for success in their chosen program (see more via http://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/international/apply/proficiency). However, even if CIS have met the minimum language requirement issued by the University, they still encounter many language problems during their learning process. For example, I am currently taking a writing course at the McGill Writing Centre with half of the CIS. They take the class because their academic English is less proficient and their supervisors recommended them to do so. Therefore, in this section, I will reveal the difference between the language proficiency tests and real life communications to prove that IEC are important for CIS to succeed in their study.
