Language Proficiency Tests
Out of all the language proficiency tests, the TOEFL test and IELTS test are widely accepted by ESL students and English universities because these tests assess their English proficiency comprehensively. In other words, the content of language proficiency test simulates “university classroom and student life communication” (The OG, 2012), which provides examinees an authentic English context for them to demonstrate listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. For instance, in the listening section of the TOEFL test, examinees should answer questions according to a university lecture (e.g., a history class) or a dialogue between a professor and a student. In the reading section, test takers should select the correct answer to demonstrate that they understand reading materials in academia (e.g., an article examining the influence of the Industrial Revolution I). In the speaking and writing section, test takers should be able to prove that their English is proficient enough to help them communicate ideas effectively. Therefore, the TOEFL test seems to be an efficient approach to assess test takers’ integrated English skills mentioned above.
